The features in Android 2.2 (Froyo)
It appears that a beta version of Android 2.2 has leaked it’s way out, so now we have a (somewhat) definitive list of what features will be included. According to Googling Google, Froyo will include:
- JIT Compiler. This will help applications run much faster — by as much as 3x.
- Automatic app updates. From what I’ve read, you can select (on an app-by-app basis) to allow apps to auto-update to the latest version.
- FM Radio. Some phones, like the Nexus One, have an FM receiver built-in. This will enable it.
- New Linux kernel. This kernel uses less RAM (freeing up more for you) and has a variety of enhancements.
- OpenGL improvements. This will help with gaming.
- Flash 10.1 support. Finally.
- Colored trackball lights. This was supposed to happen with the launch of the Nexus One, but it had to be scrapped at the last minute from Android 2.1. This will allow different apps to light up the trackball with different colors (red=email, blue=sms, etc).
No official release date has been set, but it’s assumed that it will be released on May 19, the start of the Google I/O conference. It’ll certainly be available for the Nexus One, but it appears likely that it’ll arrive on the Verizon DROID around the same time.
