Samsung and Yahoo teaming up; this isn’t good
Samsung and Yahoo are teaming up via a “strategic global partnership” to completely Yahooify your phone.
According to Business Wire they’ll be teaming up on a variety of devices, including those running Android. These phones will replace many of the built-in Google features (mail, calendar, contacts, etc) with the Yahoo counterpart. Considering how popular Yahoo mail is, this isn’t a completely bad move. However, it’s got two downsides:
- I can’t imagine their apps would be better then the Google versions. Many will just replace the data (like on the calendar), but replacing Gmail with Yahoo Mail on the phone doesn’t sound fun.
- Firmware updates will be much less frequent. Similar to the HTC Incredible not being updated as quickly as the Nexus One, I would expect these phones to be far behind each firmware revision.
What do you think? Would you buy a phone like this, or hold out for one that still had the Googleness intact?
