Everybody’s favorite Android apps
I’ve noticed a few “my favorite Android app” posts today, so I thought it might be good to dig into that a little bit.
Google Operating System posted their 12 favorite apps, and Google’s own Matt Cutts posted his 39 favorite apps. Remarkably, the two lists only had one item in common — Seesmic (for Twitter). It’s a great app, and I find it better than the new official Twitter app, although that one is solid too.
All in all I agreed more with Matt’s list, though the GOS suggestion of Quick Settings was great — what a sweet app! Here are some of the other apps that I use almost every day:
- Evernote: The app itself isn’t as good as the iPhone app, but it’s catching up. My life is in Evernote, so any kind of app from them is gold.
- Bulletin: The best Google Reader app, though I’m still looking for something a bit faster.
- Facebook: It’s solid.
- WordPress: It’s a wonderful way to moderate comments on the go. You can write/edit posts, too, but that’s not very practical.
- Pandora: I use it more on my computer than my phone, but it’s nice to have.
- Sportacular: Not nearly as good as the iPhone version, but it’s a great way to grab quick sports scores.
- Mint.com: It just came out today, and it’s quite good.
- PingDroid: To post to my ping.fm account while on the go.
- WeatherBug: I’ve played with the Weather Channel app too, but this app seems less buggy.
Other cool apps that I don’t use as often:
- YouVersion Bible: Great app with many translations of the Bible.
- Blow Up: Fun game to kill some time.
- Doodle Jump: Another fun game. My six year old loves it!
- FourSquare and Gowalla: I “check in” at a lot of places.
- Google Earth and Google Sky Map: Neither is particularly useful very often, but they’re both very cool.
- iMobsters: Another fun way to kill some time.
- PayPal: I don’t use it much, but it’s great in a pinch.
- Shazam: I pull this out every week or so to find out who is singing a song that I hear; usually in restaurants. It does an amazing job of picking up songs above the ambient noise.
So what are the apps that you can’t live without?
